More Monthly Makes for November...

Since today is the last day in November I thought I'd squeak in a few more Monthly Makes. I made a couple more Christmas tree ornaments.

My version of a Blue Jay...

 and, a Chickadee...sorta...

After struggling to make patterns for the felt birds I've made so far, I then discovered Downeast Thunder Farms.

Ah well....I enjoyed the challenge but sometimes it's nice when someone does the work for you:)

I borrowed the idea for a Christmas Dove from Downeast Thunder Farm. I changed the pattern a bit by making the back wing a separate piece. Susan has a ton of bird patterns and all of them are so simple to make:)

Gingermelon Dolls has posted a free Santa pattern on her blog that is adorable....I'm definitely going to make some.

I have a few more felt decorations in the works which I will share next time.

Take care:)

WIP Wednesday.....

I decided to make some Christmas ornaments that are kid friendly. My granddaughter will be 2 1/2 years old this Christmas and is at that stage when she has to touch and look at everything. Last year all the Christmas trees in the family had bare branches at the bottom.......the decorations were placed up high and away from little hands.

the little imp:)

This year I'm putting decorations at the bottom that she can touch.

I found this really adorable decoration on Pinterest from a blog called....Flamingo Toes ....a mug of cocoa with two little marshmellows floating on top......you will find the pattern and the tutorial to make it at that site.

She's very interested in watching birds at a feeder she made at playschool so I thought an English Robin would be very cute too.....I love when I get cards from Britain with those cute robins on them.

I'm not much of an artist so I looked for a simple picture that I could use as a template and I found one at rspb.org.
I did learn a few lessons making this.......the tail was too skinny so I had to reenforce it with a tiny bit of armature wire.
I glued the wing on upside down but she won't know.....sshhh:)

Then I made a little red winter coat .....

Of course I had to make some elf's shoes from a pattern designed by Jenny at Allsorts. This is an old pattern that I've made before but this time I printed them at a much smaller size......1/4 of the original pattern size.
I still have a ton of felt so I think it'll keep me busy for a wee while. I found a few more free felt ornament patterns on the internet and once I've made some I'll post some pictures.

I'm joining up today with The Needle & Thread Network..

Take care:)

Free Doll Pattern.......

Colleen Babcock over at The Magic Bean is offering a free doll pattern.....it's a very sweet little doll.

Here's a bit of Colleen's description from her blog........

"step by step photo instructions not only include how to sew and make the doll's body it also includes how to make her little knickers, shoes and a completely reversible dress.    The instructions also cover some great sewing tricks like using French seams and "stitching in the ditch", so this project is also a great opportunity to improve your sewing skills."

Not only is she offering this pattern but in later weeks there will be a pattern for pajamas and slippers:)

This is a great Christmas gift for some little girl...or big girl....that you know.

Cloth Doll Artistry Fairy Doll Challenge Entry.....

Well the challenge due date is over so I can show you what I made with the Faylinn Fairy pattern that all of the entrants used.

If you want to make the doll yourself you can find the free pattern at Clothmatters here....It's a tiny shelf sitter fairy about 12 inches in length.

My son took a couple of pictures for me but then he said that my pictures weren't bad....

She has big hair.....:)

I found making the face the hardest part because it was a very small area to work in. My fine motor skills aren't what they used to be...LOL

I used freezer paper for the pattern which I then ironed on to my fabric. It gave me more control and accuracy for the small body pieces and now I'm a convert. I will be using freezer paper again.

Her dress is made from the petals of a silk flower and some recycled gift ribbon. I had some hot pink scrapbook trim which I used as an embellishment. Her wings are flower leaves. Her hair is fake fur. I bought a remnant of it for 25 cents about 30 odd years ago and now I have finally used a bit.
I'm pretty pleased with how she turned out as I'm fairly new to doll making and this is the smallest doll I have ever made.

Take care.

Leafy runner......

Well I'm still here:) I didn't melt away with heat despite the fact that at one point the humidex was 51C which converted is 123.8F. I went outside for a moment and it was like opening the oven and getting in. Nothing was moving except later at dinner time we saw a little rabbit bopping about the backyard. It even came up the steps close to our back door and very close to my lettuce plants. It did eat some of our marigold leaves and I saw it eat some dandelion leaves. Munch, munch:)

So, I stayed inside with the A/C at high and roamed about the internet. I saw this table runner over at Martha Stewart's site. It is so easy to make if you use her template and store bought bias tape. My mum taught me to make my own bias and I personally think it makes a more professional finish but it does take a lot of fabric.

I was thinking about making a template for a holly leaf and making one for Christmas. It would make a nice gift. But, then I had a think and putting bias on that kind of shape could get messy. I'll have to experiment with it I guess:)

Take care:)

Summertime and the living is easy......and hot.......

Hmmmm......Smokey is lying by the back screen door waiting to go out.....:) Maybe later.

Outside my sewing room window it is hazy and hot...not a breeze.......

Some cloud gathering but no rain in sight....sigh. My roses are doing well but because of the heat they aren't lasting very long. I'll enjoy them while I can.

And, maybe do some embroidery. Here's a cute freebie for you gnome lovers out there.....it comes in three sizes.........from feeling stitchy.

Take care:)

Under the Sea Challenge....

How to make a paper gift bag.......

On Saturday I had a birthday party to go to and when it came time to wrap the gift I realized I didn't have a gift bag or wrapping paper that was big enough for the gift and I didn't have time to go buy anything........fortunately the gift was for a one year old and she didn't care:)

But, from now on I will never have this problem.......because.......today I was sent this link on "How  to make gift bags from newspaper."

From Howaboutorange.blogspot.com
Now, I'm not sure about using newspaper because of the ink that still comes off some newspapers.....unless you iron it, like they did on Upstairs Downstairs:).......but any paper would do.

You could get really creative.......even personalize the bags by making collages with the recipients name and scanned and printed pictures.

The possibilities are endless.......birthdays, weddings.......one of a kind creations :)

Take care.
