Christmas temporarily postponed...............

...........by the worst ice storm ever recorded here. Forty hours of ice rain resulted in one big mess....trees down...power lines down.... and roads like skating rinks.

We had no power for 65 hours. It went out about 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night and went back on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

It got mighty cold in our house. It went down to 7C inside and it was a brisk -17C outside this morning. Needless to say my turkey was still frozen solid so we didn't have turkey for Christmas dinner today.
The gazebo frame and the wires going into the house.

The poor trumpet vine.

It looks pretty but boy was it cold and very treacherous to walk about.

The bird feeders were totally covered with an inch of ice.

The down spout on the back porch.....it looks like the rain froze instantly as it poured out..

Food wise we had to be creative.......and with a glass of very very chilled wine...bearable:) Scrabble by candle light was fun......like camping in the winter sort of.....although it was very hard to handle those little tiles with gloves on.

My husband finally found a fast food place that was open on Tuesday...Tim Horton's...and we had our first hot food since Saturday. The hot chicken noodle soup from Tim's was amazing:)

I was really starting to lose it on Tuesday afternoon.......my patience was wearing thin I think. I had so many layers of clothing on that if I fell over I wouldn't be able to stand up again....LOL I looked like the Michelin Man. The sound of the furnace going on was the best Christmas gift ever:)

Take care.

  1. Yes, I can relate. However, ours went back on early Monday morning and I missed just one day of baking. I've had the heat way up ever since (except at night) and the oven being on has helped. Our celebrations are tomorrow so the turkey will be done then. This is the first Christmas ever that we will be having it on Boxing Day but that's what happens when the children spend Christmas with their significant other's side of the family. It's only a day...

  2. Oh you poor thing, I heard about storms in Europe but an ice storm in Canada!
Are you sure you don't want to emigrate? The sun is shining here and the beaches crowded.
I hope you enjoy your turkey dinner if it ever defrosts.

  3. I guess in years to come you will look back on this whole adventure as being one of the most memorable Christmas' ever, but it sure wasn't fun to live through it. Glad you finally have heat!

  4. I am so sorry that you had to go through this difficult ice storm bringing about the "no heat" situation. I'll never forget the two years we went without a furnace. Yes, two years of no heat except for space heaters (but at least we had those). No electric and no furnace makes the bones freeze.
I'm glad your furnace is on now and thank goods for Tim Horton's soup!
It really makes me think about all those pioneers who lived by candlelight, oil lamps and fire places. I don't know how they did it.

    Well, enjoy your turkey soon.

  5. So sorry to hear your Christmas got postponed. We had a bad storm here in the UK on Monday night with winds of up to 70mph. Lots of damage done across the country.Locally we had brick walls topple over , trees down and fence panels smashed. The next one is due in about 2 hrs time so we are hunkered down and waiting to see what happens next. Hope your New year gets off to a better start than your Christmas did. Hugs Mrs A.

  6. Mary Ann I'm so sorry you had to go so long without heat. We went out to a pet store to warm everyone up and bought hot coffee in our thermos mugs. You have stamina to stay at home for the duration.

If you leave a comment and I don't respond it's because I didn't get an email notice. It could be because you are a "no reply" blogger. Here is a way to fix that......http://morefromyourblog.com/no-reply-blogger-how-to-fix-this/
